Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes and his team received praise for their draft selections, but there has been some scrutiny, particularly regarding their decisions to trade up, notably in the fourth round. Traditionally, there’s been debate in NFL circles about the value of trading up versus trading down for additional assets.

This year, Holmes opted to trade up four times to acquire players they highly valued. One decision that attracted attention was trading up to pick University of British Columbia offensive lineman Giovanni Manu.

In discussions with NFL executives, Holmes’ aggressive approach was questioned, with one executive suggesting that trading a 2025 third-round pick to the Jets for Manu and using another fourth-rounder for safety/running back Sione Vaki bordered on arrogance.

Despite the bold moves, Detroit’s recent success in drafting offensive linemen has earned them some leeway. Under Holmes’ leadership, the Lions have improved significantly in the draft, with notable mid-round successes. This success has shifted perceptions of the organization from bottom dwellers to contenders for the Super Bowl.

While some question the risks taken by Detroit’s leadership, others admire their willingness to take swings in the draft. The Lions’ Day 3 haul included Manu, Vaki, defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo, and offensive lineman Christian Mahogany.
