According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Detroit Lions have extended the contract of experienced safety and special teams standout C.J. Moore for one more year. Moore, who faced a suspension in 2023 due to violating the league’s gambling regulations, has been reinstated to the NFL.
Initially joining the Lions in 2019 as an undrafted player, Moore impressed with his contributions on special teams, earning a spot on the active roster. Despite a brief departure from Detroit due to injury settlement requirements, Moore’s desire to return to the team led to negotiations facilitated by his agent.
Expressing his loyalty to Detroit upon his return, Moore highlighted the confidence within the team’s locker room. In the subsequent offseason, Moore inked a two-year contract with the Lions, demonstrating the team’s recognition of his value, especially in special teams roles.
However, Moore faced setbacks when he and several other Lions were implicated in a gambling-related violation of NFL rules, resulting in suspensions. Following his reinstatement in April, the Lions opted to retain Moore, emphasizing their appreciation for players who excel in special teams duties.
Despite this, the Lions remain open to bolstering their roster, particularly at the safety position, where the current lineup consists of players on rookie contracts. With spots still available on the roster, the Lions may consider adding more veteran depth, possibly at safety or other positions of need, especially with the NFL allowing teams to carry up to 90 players during this period.
