Too Sad to Say Goodbye: Tarik Skubal is leaving the Detroit Tigers to join…

Trading away Tarik Skubal would represent a defeatist mindset for the Detroit Tigers.

We’re a bit over a quarter of the way through the season, and the Detroit Tigers hold a .500 record. As expected, discussions among fans have turned to the possibility of trading the Cy Young favorite, Tarik Skubal. The buzz on social media recently centered around whether the Tigers should part ways with him. In short, the answer is likely “no,” with a more detailed response leaning towards “probably not.”

Here’s where the argument for trading Skubal originates:

1. Injury Concerns: Skubal has a history of injuries, including undergoing flexor tendon and Tommy John surgeries. There’s apprehension that despite his talent, he could face significant time off due to injuries in the future.

2. Contract Cost: If Skubal stays healthy, his value will increase, making it challenging for the Tigers, who are reluctant to spend big, to retain him. However, at present, he offers substantial value.

3. Team Imbalance: The Tigers have showcased strong pitching but struggled offensively, leading to a below .500 record. Some argue that trading Skubal could help address this imbalance by acquiring offensive talent.

4. No Untouchables:While no player is deemed untouchable, it ultimately depends on the quality of the package offered. If another team proposes a compelling deal, it’s logical to consider it to bolster the team.

Presenting these points makes a case for trading Skubal, highlighting his current value, potential future risks, and the team’s areas for improvement. However, executing such a move comes with considerable challenges and risks:

1. Trade Outcomes: Acquiring a star player often favors the receiving team, but there’s a significant gap between potential and actual success, especially with prospects. Trading for prospects involves uncertainty, and the hype around prospects can cloud judgment.

2. Timing: Unlike trading players in their final contract year, where gaining something in return is preferable to losing them for nothing, Skubal’s situation doesn’t align with this scenario.

Trading Skubal would likely result in a disadvantageous outcome for the Tigers. The probable scenario involves watching Skubal thrive elsewhere, akin to past experiences with Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and Rick Porcello. To make a trade worthwhile, the Tigers would need assurance of acquiring an established young star in a different position or multiple above-average players, which seems improbable.

Given the team’s current position, there’s no immediate necessity to act. While the Tigers have experienced a rough patch, it’s premature to abandon their long-term strategy. If a remarkable trade opportunity arises, they should consider it, but otherwise, pursuing such a move risks alienating fans and prolonging their ongoing rebuilding process.

This approach is a risk the Tigers cannot afford to take.
