Reportedly, the Chicago Bears have secured former Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard in free agency. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Byard is finalizing a two-year contract with the Bears valued at a base of $15 million.
Initially drafted by the Titans in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft, Byard established himself as one of the premier players in his position during his tenure spanning over seven seasons with Tennessee. However, his performance took a downturn in 2023, particularly after he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, resulting in his release from the team earlier this month.
Throughout the 2023 season, Byard struggled, posting a completion rate of 74.6% and a passer rating of 102.1 across 16 games. These figures marked the lowest completion rate of his career and the second-lowest passer rating.
Despite his recent setbacks, there is belief that Byard still possesses valuable skills and can contribute to the Bears’ emerging defense, leveraging his experience and leadership. His tenure in Philadelphia likely leaves him motivated, presenting Chicago with a player eager to prove himself anew.
