One New Zealand Warriors forward Mitchell Barnett has extended his commitment to the club until the end of the 2027 NRL season, signing a new two-year contract.

Barnett, who joined the Warriors from Newcastle last season, initially signed a three-year deal set to expire at the end of 2025.

This new contract highlights an eventful period for Barnett, who has been selected for the New South Wales State of Origin squad, captained the Warriors, and welcomed his second son, Zane, with his wife Clare two weeks ago.

“Having Mitch with us for the next three seasons is crucial for the club,” said Andrew McFadden, the Warriors’ general manager of recruitment, pathways, and development. “He embodies all the qualities we want in our players.”

Barnett, who hails from Wingham in New South Wales, will make his 157th career appearance and his 29th for the Warriors in the 15th-round match against Melbourne at Go Media Stadium on Saturday.

“Mitch epitomizes toughness, resilience, and leadership,” said Warriors head coach Andrew Webster. “Whether he’s in the front row or on the edge, he gives the team everything and more. During our tough times, Mitch was the glue. He worked tirelessly and truly deserved his Origin call-up. He excels under pressure.”

Off the field, Barnett is a tremendous influence, showing immense passion for the club. “We love him,” Webster added.

Barnett credits Webster for elevating his career. “Webby and I have really connected. He understands rugby league, life, and the balance between the two,” Barnett said. “I needed a change. My form and career were stagnating at Newcastle, and I wanted to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone. I wanted to come here to prove my worth.”
