With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Texas Longhorns sophomore pinch hitter Amari Harper faced the most crucial at-bat of her career.

In a tight 6-5 game, the Aggies were mounting a comeback. Senior catcher Julia Cottrill’s three-run homer had cut the Longhorns’ lead to just one run, and freshman pitcher Teagan Kavan was struggling. Kavan had allowed three runs and three hits in one and a third innings after taking over for the dominant Mac Morgan, who had pitched six innings, giving up only four hits and no earned runs.

Following Cottrill’s homer, Kavan walked the next two batters on four pitches each. With Harper at the plate, the tension at McCombs Field was palpable. Despite having two pitchers warming up in the bullpen, Kavan was kept in to secure the final out needed for a Women’s College World Series berth.

Kavan’s first pitch was a strike, and from there, she found her rhythm. Kavan struck Harper out looking, securing the Longhorns’ 6-5 victory and their seventh trip to the Women’s College World Series.
