The former Charleston guard, now playing for the Louisville Cardinals, gained valuable international experience this past weekend.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Before his debut with the Louisville men’s basketball team, Reyne Smith gained valuable international experience.
Recently, the transfer guard from Charleston participated in the 2024 Nissay Cup, a two-game exhibition series between Australia Select and the Japanese National Team in Hokkaido, Japan. Australia Select is a segment of the Australian National Team featuring a mix of young prospects, collegiate players, and NBL players.
Smith, from Ulverstone, Australia, performed well for his home country. In game one, he scored six points off the bench in a 90-89 win; in game two, he contributed seven points, a rebound, an assist, and a steal in a 95-95 tie.
Among the 12-man roster for Australia Select, Smith’s 13 points over the two games ranked seventh. Sam Froling led the team with 32 points over the series. Selected players from this team may soon attend training camp for the Australian National Team’s 2024 Summer Olympics squad.
Smith, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard, was a standout for the Cougars last season. Playing in all 35 games with 28 starts, he led the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game, along with averages of 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists. His performance earned him a spot on the All-CAA Second Team.
A three-point specialist, Smith hit 39.4 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc and 41.0 percent of his field goals overall. Of his 133 made field goals last season, 112 were three-pointers, and 284 of his 324 attempts were from beyond the arc.
Throughout his three college seasons, Smith has been consistently productive. In 102 career games with 89 starts at Charleston, he has accumulated 1,212 points, 294 made three-pointers, 192 rebounds, 149 assists, and 68 steals.
