Grant McCasland gives injury update on two of his most important starters

LUBBOCK – Two weeks after the Texas Tech basketball team started arriving on campus for summer workouts and about an hour before a flight to Colorado to begin working with the USA Basketball U19 team, Grant McCasland returned to the dais in the United Supermarkets Arena press conference room for a summer update with local media. Fresh off a trip to the program’s third NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance, McCasland and his staff have quickly turned the page focused on building out another roster with the goal of winning a national championship.

“It’s been a wild spring trying to navigate the changes in college basketball and how abruptly the season ends and you step right into putting together another team,” McCasland said. “Even while you’re dealing with one of the most difficult losses all of us have experienced. I love where we are at with our group as we’ve put our team together and have been around them. It’s a fantastic group of guys who love hoops and getting better. We haven’t been together long but I couldn’t be more excited about our team and being a Red Raider.”

Along with returning JT Toppin and Christian Anderson who played key roles in last year’s success, the 2025-26 team grew through the transfer portal with the additions of Tyeree Bryan (Santa Clara), LeJuan Watts (Washington State), Donovan Atwell (UNC Greensboro), Josiah Moseley (Villanova) and Luke Bamgboye (VCU) along with freshman Nolan Groves (Long Lake, Minnesota). The team will continue workouts throughout the next two months with McCasland set to serve as an assistant coach with USA Basketball during a training camp in Colorado Springs to prepare for the 2025 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup in Switzerland later this summer.
