Rest in Peace: Former Vasco da Gama Head Coach Álvaro Pacheco Passes Away at 53

The football community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Portuguese manager Álvaro Pacheco at the age of 53. Pacheco, known for his recent tenure as head coach of Brazil’s Vasco da Gama, reportedly succumbed to a heart attack earlier today.

Born on June 25, 1971, in Vila Cova da Lixa, Portugal, Pacheco’s football journey began as a player, primarily in Portugal’s lower leagues. Transitioning to management, he made significant strides, notably leading F.C. Vizela to consecutive promotions, elevating them to the Primeira Liga. His success with Vizela earned him the Portuguese Coach of the Year award in 2021.

In May 2024, Pacheco took the hem at Vasco da Gama. However, his tenure was brief, lasting only four matches without a victory, leading to his departure in June 2024. Subsequently, he managed Saudi Arabia’s Al-Orobah FC from July 2024 until January 2025.

Pacheco’s coaching philosophy was characterized by resilience and a commitment to developing teams with limited resources. His unexpected death has sent shockwaves through the football world, with former clubs and colleagues expressing their condolences.

Álvaro Pacheco is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

The football fraternity remembers Pacheco not only for his tactical acumen but also for his dedication to the sport and the players he mentored. His legacy will endure in the clubs he transformed and the lives he touched throughout his career.
