  • Michael Sadler and Jim Crichton Depart SAGA, Announce Formation of New Band “Echo Signal”

In a move that has stunned fans of Canadian prog-rock legends SAGA, longtime frontman Michael Sadler and founding bassist/keyboardist Jim Crichton have officially announced their departure from the band to form a brand-new musical project titled “Echo Signal.” The announcement came early this morning via a joint statement on social media and their newly launched official website.

Sadler, whose unmistakable vocals have defined SAGA’s sound since the band’s inception in 1977, said the decision was “not made lightly,” but emphasized it was “time to explore new creative horizons.” Crichton, a central force in the band’s songwriting and production over the decades, echoed the sentiment, calling the new project “a natural evolution.”

“Echo Signal” promises to delve into “cinematic progressive rock,” combining the melodic sensibilities that defined SAGA with darker, more atmospheric tones. While specific details on their debut album remain under wraps, the duo confirmed that recording has already begun and that fans can expect a teaser single by the end of the summer.

Reactions from the SAGA camp have been respectful, with remaining members thanking Sadler and Crichton for their decades of contribution. “We’re saddened but supportive,” guitarist Ian Crichton said. “SAGA will continue, but it won’t be the same without them.”

Fans are divided—many expressing heartbreak over the split, others intrigued by what Sadler and Crichton’s new direction will sound like. Progressive rock forums and social media are abuzz with speculation.

While it marks the end of a monumental chapter in SAGA’s history, the birth of Echo Signal could signal a bold new era for these two iconic musicians. As always, in true prog fashion, evolution seems inevitable.
