Rams’ $80 Million Decision Fuels Trade Speculation After Draft

The Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford have reached a new agreement that secures the Pro Bowl signal-caller’s future in LA with what was originally a four-year, $160 million contract amid offseason trade rumors. The restructuring of his deal has caught the attention of many.

At 37, Stafford and the Rams now essentially find themselves in a year-to-year arrangement, with the possibility of his retirement subtly in the background.

Nonetheless, this revision of his contract—and the manner in which it was executed—sets a positive precedent for the Rams’ future maneuvers.

According to Turf Show Times’ Blaine Grisak on April 30, “Stafford’s newly revised deal creates $8.7 million in cap space for 2025, reducing his cap hit from $49.67 million to $40.97 million. By summer, this move will leave the Rams with an effective cap space of $24.6 million.”

This additional salary cap room enables the team to potentially sign more players if the need arises, or to accommodate the contract of a specific cornerback from the Miami Dolphins. Furthermore, during the draft, reports surfaced that the Rams had shown interest in Jalen Ramsey. If given the opportunity, it appears that returning to the Rams might be the most appealing option for him.
