Melbourne, April 28, 2025 — The AFL world was rocked today by devastating news that Collingwood Football Club’s senior coach, Craig McRae, was involved in a horrific multi-vehicle collision on the Monash Freeway during morning peak hour. The incident, which occurred around 7:45am, involved four cars and a delivery truck, with emergency services describing the scene as “chaotic and deeply distressing.”

McRae, 51, was reportedly driving to the AIA Centre for team meetings ahead of Collingwood’s upcoming Round 8 clash when the crash occurred near the Toorak Road exit. According to witnesses, his vehicle was struck at high speed from behind, causing a chain-reaction pile-up. Paramedics arrived swiftly, and after stabilizing him at the scene, he was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital with what authorities described as “serious but not immediately life-threatening injuries.”

The Nation Holds Its Breath

The news sent shockwaves through the sporting community and beyond. Collingwood players and staff were immediately informed, and a scheduled training session was postponed. Supporters began gathering outside the club’s headquarters by mid-morning, many in tears, visibly shaken by the unfolding tragedy.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon issued a statement just hours after the crash:

“Craig McRae is not only a brilliant football mind, but a man of immense integrity, humility, and heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with Craig, his wife Gabrielle, and their young daughter. The entire AFL community is behind him.”

Tributes Pour In

Messages of support flooded social media from fans, fellow coaches, and former players. Richmond’s Damien Hardwick, who coached with McRae during his time at Punt Road, posted:

“Fly is one of the best humans I’ve ever known. A fighter in every sense. We’re with you, mate.”

Former Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury shared an emotional video urging fans to “keep the faith and send love.”

A Towering Figure in Modern AFL

McRae, who took over the reins at Collingwood in 2022, has led a resurgence that culminated in a thrilling 2023 premiership win. Known for his calm leadership, tactical sharpness, and deep empathy for his players, he has quickly become one of the most respected figures in Australian football.

The club has requested privacy for McRae’s family and will provide updates when appropriate. For now, fans and the broader public wait in anxious hope for good news.
