CBS Sports has stated that the Cincinnati Bengals executed one of the most intelligent moves in NFL free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals made significant moves in free agency this year, bringing in players like Geno Stone, Zack Moss, Mike Gesicki, Sheldon Rankins, Vonn Bell, and Trent Brown to address gaps in their roster. One particular acquisition caught the attention of CBS Sports.

CBS Sports recognized the signing of Geno Stone as one of the most astute moves in NFL Free Agency this year. In a competitive safety market, securing Stone for $7 million annually seems to be a particularly advantageous deal. Stone showcased his talent during a standout season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, benefiting from playing alongside Kyle Hamilton and achieving seven interceptions.

Stone’s performance was remarkable, with opposing quarterbacks completing only 60.5% of their passes and holding a 40.9 passer rating when targeting him, resulting in just two touchdowns. Additionally, he deflected nine passes while effectively playing both free and strong safety roles.

With the contract structured as a one-year gamble, the Bengals have minimal financial risk, with only a $1.5 million dead cap hit in the second year if they opt to release him. At just 24 years old, Stone’s potential for growth suggests that a standout season could significantly elevate his market value.

Having initially been drafted in the seventh round by the Ravens in 2020, Stone’s journey has led to a lucrative contract with the Bengals. His consistency, evidenced by playing in 15 games in 2021 and all 17 games in 2022 and 2023, culminated in a stellar 2023 season, where he recorded 68 tackles and led all safeties in interceptions.

In essence, Stone’s acquisition bolsters the Bengals’ secondary with much-needed veteran experience, making him a valuable addition to the team.
