The Detroit Lions Might Acquire a Versatile Game-Changer in Surprising Move
The Detroit Lions are eyeing potential wide receiver options to bolster their depth behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, and according to Lauren Gray of Pro Football Focus, University of Florida wideout Ricky Pearsall could be a viable solution for them in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Pearsall is highly regarded as one of the top slot receivers in this draft class and could be selected in the late first round, around the time the Lions are scheduled to pick at No. 29. Hailing from Chandler, Arizona, he is coming off a productive 2023 season where he recorded 65 receptions for 965 yards and four touchdowns, adding two rushing scores to his resume.
Initially starting his collegiate career at Arizona State, Pearsall spent three seasons there before transferring to Florida. His standout season with the Sun Devils came in 2021, tallying 48 catches for 580 yards and four touchdowns. Upon joining the Gators in 2022, he contributed 33 receptions for 661 yards and found the end zone five times.
Pearsall’s versatility is evident, as he also showcased his skills as a rusher, accumulating 21 carries for 253 yards and five touchdowns throughout his college career.
With the departure of No. 2 receiver Josh Reynolds in free agency, the Lions have a need to add depth behind St. Brown. Although former first-round pick Jameson Williams is currently slated as the second receiver, his lack of proven experience raises questions.
While the Lions have other areas of need, particularly on defense, if Pearsall is available when Detroit is on the clock in the first round, they may opt to select him.
Coming off their most successful season in three decades, which included winning their first division title since 1993 and clinching their first playoff victory since January 1992, the Lions have heightened expectations. Despite falling short in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, the team’s progress signals a promising future.
