Arkansas head coach Jordyn Wieber expressed that although it won’t be easy, her team has consistently surprised her throughout the season. As they prepare for the 2024 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships, Wieber anticipates her team entering with a competitive spirit, sticking to the winning strategies that have brought them success so far. She eagerly awaits the first day of competition, believing that anything is achievable.
The Razorbacks have shattered numerous program records this season and defied expectations, notably by securing a spot in the semifinals after triumphing over formidable opponents like No. 7 Kentucky and No. 15 Minnesota. Facing their toughest challenge yet against No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Cal, and Stanford, Wieber asserts that her team is well-prepared due to the demanding schedule they’ve tackled thus far.
Having previously competed against LSU and Cal, Arkansas didn’t secure victories, but they have improved their overall score since then. The experience of athletes like Lauren Williams and Sirena Linton, who have competed individually at the national level, is proving invaluable in the team’s preparation and leadership.
Wieber draws on her own experience in high-pressure competitions, including her time as part of the 2012 Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. team, offering advice to her team to remain present, composed, and consistent.
As the Razorbacks prepare to start on beam in the semifinals, which is a new scenario for them this season, Wieber expresses confidence in their ability to perform, given their muscle memory and focus on taking each event one step at a time.
For Wieber, this journey holds personal significance as she navigates her first time advancing past regionals as a head coach. In just five years, she has transformed the Arkansas program into a national contender, fulfilling the team’s aspirations to compete on the national stage once again.
The Razorbacks’ journey continues with Semifinal 1 on Thursday, April 18, live on ESPN2. The top two teams from each semifinal will progress to the national championship, where individual titles and All-Americans will be recognized.
