The Tigers dismiss their pitching coach due to the use of “racially insensitive language” directed at a team staff member.

The Detroit Tigers have terminated pitching coach Chris Bosio’s contract due to “insensitive remarks breaching Club policy and his Uniform Employee Contract,” as stated in a team announcement. Tigers GM Al Avila informed ESPN that Bosio used “racially insensitive language.”

Bosio, who was in his inaugural year with the Tigers, had previously served as pitching coach for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2003), Milwaukee Brewers (2009), and Chicago Cubs (2012-2017) before joining Ron Gardenhire in Detroit for the 2018 season. His most notable success came during his tenure in Chicago, where he played a key role in Theo Epstein’s rebuild, overseeing a pitching staff that contributed to the Cubs’ World Series victory in 2016.

Prior to his coaching career, Bosio had an 11-year MLB stint from 1986 to 1996, playing for the Brewers and Mariners and amassing a 94-93 record with a career ERA of 3.96.

The specifics of Bosio’s remarks leading to his termination remain undisclosed. Nonetheless, the Tigers find themselves unexpectedly making a midseason coaching change. Rick Anderson, formerly the team’s bullpen coach, will step in as pitching coach, as reported by Detroit News journalist Chris McCosky.
