Tennessee football recruitment update: Highly-rated local quarterback George MacIntyre chooses Vols instead of Alabama.
George MacIntyre, a highly rated five-star quarterback from Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy, made his commitment to Tennessee official on Monday morning.
MacIntyre, positioned at No. 15 overall and as the third-ranked quarterback in the Class of 2025 according to the 247Sports Composite, opted for Tennessee over Alabama. Notably, the majority of the top quarterbacks, including all three five-star prospects, in the Class of 2025 have already made their commitments.
MacIntyre’s family ties are noteworthy; he is the nephew of FIU coach Mike MacIntyre and the grandson of former Vanderbilt coach George MacIntyre.
For Tennessee, MacIntyre’s commitment not only holds significance for the team’s future on the field but also adds another influential figure in recruiting circles before the summer camp season begins. Prior to MacIntyre’s decision, the Vols already secured commitments from five players, led by four-star Texas tight end Jack VanDorselaer.
Given his potential impact, MacIntyre could play a pivotal role in attracting other prospects, contributing to Tennessee’s success in recruiting high-level talent from Nashville, a trend evident from Coach Josh Heupel’s recent signings of eight mid-state recruits in the 2023 and 2024 classes.
Regarding his role in the quarterback lineup, MacIntyre’s timing aligns with the possibility of following a similar trajectory as the Vols’ 2024 starting quarterback, Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava, a five-star prospect, observed and learned behind starter Joe Milton before showcasing his readiness in the Citrus Bowl win over Iowa. Assuming Iamaleava continues to progress, MacIntyre could potentially assume the starting role as a sophomore.
However, uncertainties persist in the quarterback position, with the emergence of 2024 four-star signee Jake Merklinger adding complexity to the mix. As history suggests, the quarterback landscape in college football seldom unfolds precisely as anticipated.
