“Sandy’s Beach” is gearing up for its reopening for the Miami Marlins.

We have an update regarding the injured Miami Marlins ace, Sandy Alcantara. The 2022 National League Cy Young award winner will sit out the current season, with Jesus Luzardo taking the mound on Opening Day instead. Fans will have to wait until the 2025 season to see the ace back in action, but there’s positive news from the latest report.

Miami Marlins’ ace Sandy Alcantara has embarked on his journey to recovery. Alcantara has been one of the most outstanding starting pitchers in Miami Marlins history since his debut in 2018. From 2018 to 2021, Alcantara maintained a solid 3.48 ERA and a slightly below par 4.01 FIP. He registered a 7.9 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 across 78 games and 479.0 innings pitched.

In 2022, Alcantara elevated his game to new heights, boasting a remarkable 2.28 ERA/2.99 FIP, with 8.1 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 across 32 games and 228.2 innings pitched. His stellar performance earned him a Major League-leading 7.8 WAR. However, he fell short of replicating these results in 2023, posting a 4.14 ERA/4.03 FIP, with 7.4 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 28 games and 184.2 innings pitched.

Following the 2023 season, Alcantara underwent Tommy John Surgery. The good news? He recently threw a baseball for the first time in six months. He engaged in flat ground throwing sessions at a distance of 40 feet, with his pitches reaching 50 mph. Alcantara expressed his excitement, stating, “Today was a great moment for me, throw a baseball for the first time since six months, so everything feels good. Hopefully, I’ve just got to keep doing everything I can to get ready and back as soon as I can. So I think I’ve just got to be patient and positive.”

Manager Skip Schumaker remarked that Alcantara is ahead of schedule in his recovery from Tommy John Surgery. While it’s highly unlikely he will pitch this season, fans can anticipate his return by Opening Day in 2025. “Sandy’s Beach” will once again be open for business, marking Alcantara’s triumphant comeback.
