In the 2024 NFL free agency, the Raiders acquired a former starting running back following the departure of Josh Jacobs to the Packers.

The Las Vegas Raiders have welcomed a new addition to their running back roster, as Alexander Mattison, formerly a starter for the Minnesota Vikings, has officially joined the team, according to an announcement made on Monday. Specific details regarding the contract were not made public.

Last season marked Mattison’s debut as a starter with the Vikings after serving as Dalvin Cook’s backup for four seasons. However, his performance as a primary back didn’t match his previous efficiency, as he logged a career-high of 180 carries but managed only 700 yards and failed to score any touchdowns in 16 games, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. Additionally, he made 30 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

Throughout his five-year tenure in the league, Mattison has accumulated a total of 15 touchdowns, rushing for 2,370 yards with an average of 4.1 yards per carry. Over the last three seasons, he has rushed for 1,474 yards, averaging 3.8 yards per carry.

In Las Vegas, Mattison is anticipated to vie with Zamir White for carries, with Mattison having the advantage of experience.

Meanwhile, the Vikings swiftly filled Mattison’s position by securing Aaron Jones less than a day after his release from the Green Bay Packers. This move came after the Packers signed Josh Jacobs, who had been the Raiders’ primary running back for the past five seasons.
